Autumn Frosts Time to Plan

Autumn Frosts Time to Plan

Autumn frosts in Sussex

The first frosts of autumn have given us all a renewed welcome to the season in Sussex. Blue skies have followed the frost and mist, promising maybe a sustained period of dryer brighter days ahead. Of course this is wishful thinking, but I know I feel the same as most of the population, brighter days even if crisp just lift my spirits nothing is too much of a challenge.

Dryer weather this week has encouraged the tidying of the gardens to continue at a pace. The demand on BARK, WOODLAND MULCH and 10MM ORGANIC COMPOST in Sussex has exceeded last weeks orders. There is still time to lay a new lawn, we can order TURF almost anytime, we need 2-3 days notice. The benefit of turfing this time of year is usually very little aftercare is needed, as  the weather is mild the roots will try to get established, and unless unseasonably dry no need to water the lawn.

This time of year is perfect for planning and carrying out next years projects. Raised beds are in that category due to the space, size required and work involved. This year I have been lucky enough to see them in three settings. Firstly in a garden for the use of grand children, the children were so enthusiastic about what they had planted, marigolds, sunflowers, carrots, tomatoes, peas and potatoes and they were going to eat them.
The second garden was that of a couple in their early seventies, they had built the beds on top of their old vegetable garden, enabling them to grow all there normal crops but taking out some of the back breaking work. They were so pleased with what they had achieved, stating that they had always enjoyed growing their own vegetables and can continue to do so for some time to come, they both had big smiles.
Lastly a raised bed had been constructed with three sides of a square, these could be accessed both outside and inside the square the lady’s brother had built them for her as she spent much of her day in a wheel chair. The delight was obvious and the pride she had in her beds put me to shame, she could garden, and reach all areas from her wheel chair. There are many people who would really benefit from having RAISED BEDS. We take gardening for granted, we can bend and lift and get the buzz out of growing plants and vegetables, and so many other people would like to share in the pleasure and the therapy. Who can we help? Grand children, brothers, sisters, grand parents or neighbours.
