Wet Weather Gardening

We have found this year a challenge to complete the normal tasks in our gardens on time, however it has made us use our time in a different way with surprising results. Weeding has become much easier with the soil being moist, a day of drying weather is all that is required and 1 hour per day by the end of a week average size borders are clean and weed free. Compost piles or bins a perfect time to turn and get air into the pile, helping the process and the pile to heat up these tasks are often left too long in the warmer drier weather compost needs to be moist.

Planning structures such as raised beds a perfect time to do this in the rain, what is required? Are railway sleepers required, how many and what type? How are you going to source them? Can they be delivered? Here at Olus we have new hardwood, softwood and used sleepers and these we can deliver in a 20mile radius. Existing raised beds require reconditioning of the soil, a bulk bag of 10mm Compost is the ideal medium for this and can be ordered and delivered within 3 days ready to mix 50% old and 50% new compost ready for autumn planting.

Order your bulb catalogue ready for autumn planting, and the trees & shrubs that you have been considering don’t wait another year, many Garden Centres have offers on these at this time.  Drought orders have been withdrawn, still use a mulch  around the beds, 10mm Compost is ideal as it will slowly release its nitrogen, Bark is both decorative and a good water retainer and Woodland Mulch will retain the moisture but is not so decorative both these items are also good weed suppressants at the right depth.  These items can be delivered to your home in 3 days ready for using in the drier days ahead, be ready order them now not when the soil is dry retain the moisture save money.
